The Basic Roulette Rules

Objective of the game

It is trying to guess what number/color a ball will land on the roulette wheel. The ball may be dropped on the wheel by a croupier or thrown by a mechanism.

The wheel

European variants have roulette numbers from 0 to 36 (37 in total) on the wheel. The American variant has an additional 00 pocket, so the total number is 38. (This is why it is also called “roulette double zero”.) Except for 0 (and 00), half of these numbers are black and half are red. Likewise, half are odd numbers and half are even numbers. Once again, roulette wheel odds and payouts will be different for each betting option. After a very short break (about 10-20 seconds), the croupier starts a new round, and these steps are repeated.

Inside Bets

These are bets that generally have high payout values but low chances of winning. We can list their roulette odds payout values as follows:

The basket bet is only available in the American variant, and roulette 00 payout for this bet is 6 to 1. Outside Bets

These bets offer a higher chance of winning but lower payouts. This is simply because they cover more numbers.

What you need to understand from these bet types is that as the roulette number payout values ​​increase, your probability of winning decreases. Another thing is that the European variant, i.e. single zero roulette, always offers higher odds. This difference is due to the wheel design. If you take a look at a virtual roulette wheel for both the European and American variants, you will see that the latter has an extra house pocket (00), as we mentioned above.

This additional pocket affects the odds in an unexpected way. Because in European roulette, your chance of winning a bet on a single number is 1/37, that is, 2.70%. In American roulette, you have to use the 1/38 formula for the same bet: this reduces the chance of winning to around 2.60%. This calculation is done in the same way for all other types of bets and as a result, European roulette always offers better odds.

Special Rules for Even Money Roulette Payouts

We have answered the question of “what are roulette payouts” above and now you have a general idea of how the two basic variants of roulette work. However, roulette does not only consist of these two variants: there are also types that include various side bets and even different rulesets. The most common (and advantageous) of these is the French roulette.

French roulette is essentially the same as the European variant: it does not include side bets or offer different payouts. However, for bets paying 1:1, it is played with one of two different rulesets. These are “La Partage” and “En Prison”, respectively. Contrary to popular belief, both cannot be used at the same time. If you are playing French roulette, either La Partage or En Prison rules will apply. So, what is the difference between these?

• La Partage: If the player places a bet paying 1:1 and loses it because the ball stops in the 0 pocket, he gets half of his bet back. So, for example, if he bet 20 CAD, he will get 10 CAD back: he will only lose 50% of his money.
• En Prison: If the player places a bet that pays 1:1 and loses it because the ball stops in the 0 pocket, he can use the same wager on the same outcome in the next round. So, his money is not refunded, but he gets a second chance to win.

These are not just interesting rules, they positively affect the house edge and RTP percentages. The fact that the player can get half of his money back or use it in the next round reduces the house edge value to 1.35%. This is almost as good value as blackjack. However, since they almost always include a racetrack (*), the French variants have slightly more complex gameplay and may not be suitable for beginners.

(*) It is a special betting area designed in the shape of a racetrack. They are also known as “call bets”. They have interesting names such as Voisin du Zero, Tiers du Cylindre, and Orphelins, which always cover more than one number.

Tips for Playing: Understand the Odds in Roulette, Use Your Bankroll Wisely

All variants of roulette are a game of chance, which means that luck is the only thing that determines whether you win or not. There is no system or strategy that can guarantee you a win. However, we can share some tips that will help you have a more enjoyable experience, lose less in the long run, and manage your budget more efficiently.

• Find out the real odds for all bet types and remember that these vary between variants. So, for example, the 00 payout roulette values will be the same as the single zero roulette variants, you don't have to relearn them each time. However, the chance of winning in double zero roulette will always be lower, and this chance will also differ between bet types. Before placing a bet, make sure you know in advance what your chances of winning will be.
• Remember that it is also important to manage your budget efficiently. Using your bankroll correctly is just as important as making the right bets. Don't spend all your money on one or a few bets. Ideally, it is recommended to divide your budget into groups of ten and use each group on a different bet. For example, if you have a bankroll of 1,000 CAD, you can create 100 groups of 10 CAD and place 100 different bets. In addition, remember to play responsibly. Don't be haunted by your losses, don't play with money you can't afford to lose, and know when to stop.
• If you can't decide, choose European roulette. If you can't decide which of the variants you prefer, European roulette will almost always be the best option. It has a straightforward gameplay, the bets are not complicated, the RTP and house edge values are satisfactory, and most importantly, most of the roulette games on the market are based on this variant. It is an ideal choice for both beginners and veteran players.
• Remember that you can play for free. The online version of roulette can be played for free. In demo games, a virtual balance is used, meaning the bets and payouts are not real. However, the rules, bets, and chances of winning do not change. In other words, there is no difference except that you are using virtual chips. This way you can learn the rules, test strategies, or just have fun without taking risks. Even if you prefer to play for real money, use demo versions to practice and test different scenarios.
